THE FLIGHT INTO EGYPT

This marble and smalti panel was made as a model for a larger mosaic for the entrance to the church of Our Lady and Saint Joseph on the Balls Pond Road in Islington, North London. The figures of the Madonna and Child are inspired by the great carving at Autun Cathedral by the twefth century artist, Ghiselbertus. It copies their mysterious yet evocative pose, gently holding a small sphere, perhaps the world, in their hands.
